ABOUT DISPUTIA

A place to question
what we think we know.

Disputia is an independent youth publication built around curiosity, disagreement, research and the belief that ideas become stronger when they are seriously examined.

01 · WHAT IS DISPUTIA?

Young people deserve a place to think out loud.

Disputia is an independent youth publication exploring politics, society, science, culture, technology, economics, ideas and the world around us.

We want to make difficult subjects more accessible without making them simplistic, and make disagreement more productive without pretending that everyone has to reach the same conclusion.

Disputia is founded in Türkiye and created for a generation growing up in a rapidly changing world.

02 · THE NAME
disputatioLatin

The name Disputia comes from the Latin word disputatio, associated with debate, discussion and the reasoned examination of a question or proposition.

That idea is at the centre of everything we are building: questions should be examined, arguments should be challenged, and people should have room to reconsider what they believe.

03 · WHY WE EXIST

Curiosity before certainty.

Young people are constantly surrounded by information, opinions and arguments. Having access to information, however, does not always mean having the tools to understand it.

We want to create a space where people can investigate the questions behind their opinions, encounter perspectives they may disagree with and develop conclusions of their own.

We are not interested in telling young people what to think. We are interested in giving them more reasons to think.

04 · WHAT MAKES US DIFFERENT

Open to ideas.
Accountable to evidence.

Disputia is designed around a simple principle: disagreement is valuable when people are willing to examine what they are saying and why they believe it.

01

Reporting is not opinion.

We distinguish news, analysis, opinion, essays, interviews, investigations and debates so readers know what kind of work they are reading.

02

Disagreement has a place here.

Readers and contributors do not have to share Disputia's views. Different perspectives are part of the point.

03

Claims should meet evidence.

We expect contributors to research their claims and, where appropriate, provide sources that allow readers to examine the evidence themselves.

04

Fact-checking should be visible.

We want readers to see what was reviewed, what evidence was considered and when an assessment was made.

05

A fact-check can be challenged.

Contributors can respond to a review, provide additional evidence and request reconsideration when they believe an assessment is incomplete.

06

Debates should have a real conclusion.

A debate remains open until someone concedes or the participants agree to disagree. Disputia does not need to manufacture a winner.

07

Young people participate.

Young people are not simply our audience. They can contribute, participate in communities, represent their perspectives and help shape the platform.

08

We correct ourselves.

When we make a meaningful mistake, we believe readers deserve to know about it. Corrections should be clear rather than hidden.

05 · ROOM TO DISAGREE

You don't have to agree.

We believe disagreement deserves room. People should be able to question ideas, challenge institutions, defend unpopular positions and disagree with one another.

Disputia does not require contributors or readers to share our views. We believe that open discussion becomes more meaningful when people are able to encounter ideas they reject and respond to them seriously.

At the same time, participating in an open discussion comes with editorial standards. We distinguish between someone's ability to express an argument and our responsibility to evaluate the claims made within it.

Free expression gives disagreement room to exist.
Editorial standards give that disagreement a place to be useful.
06 · FACT-CHECKING

Trust should be visible.

We expect people who contribute to Disputia to research what they publish. Relevant factual claims may be reviewed by our editorial fact-checkers.

In live debates, we plan to introduce AI-assisted fact-checking to identify claims and surface relevant evidence in real time. The system will not determine who wins a debate.

Contributors will have the ability to challenge a fact-check and provide additional evidence. Where necessary, a contested assessment can be escalated for further human review.

07 · COMMUNITIES

Different perspectives.
One place to debate them.

Disputia will bring together reader-led communities built around different political, philosophical and social perspectives.

Communities will be able to develop arguments, participate in debates and elect representatives to speak for their communities.

Disputia does not endorse the positions of individual communities. Communities provide the perspectives; Disputia provides the editorial framework.

08 · A MESSAGE FROM THE FOUNDER

Welcome to Disputia: Where Ideas Are Put to the Test

Hi, I’m Şevval!

I’m a Turkish student who researches far too much, asks far too many questions, and has probably accumulated enough dreams for several lifetimes.

If you’ve ever gone down a three-hour research rabbit hole at midnight, found yourself passionately arguing about a policy nobody asked you about, or stared at a confidently wrong take online thinking, “Surely we can do better than this,”—welcome. You’re probably exactly who I had in mind.

I’ve always loved debate, MUN, research, and, honestly, figuring out why people believe what they believe. But I’ve also gotten pretty tired of debates where someone confidently throws out a completely false “fact,” everyone starts arguing about it, and nobody actually checks whether it’s true.

That’s a big part of why I created Disputia.

I also think young people are too often overlooked simply because older generations have more “experience.” And yes, experience matters—I’d never argue otherwise. But experience shouldn’t be the only thing that determines whose ideas deserve to be heard. Our generation has a lot to say. We’re growing up in a world that looks very different from the one before us, and we should have a place to question it, discuss it, and help shape what comes next.

From the Latin word disputatio, meaning debate or reasoned discussion, Disputia is my attempt to create that space: somewhere young people can have strong opinions, challenge each other, change their minds, and—most importantly—actually think.

I don’t want Disputia to be an echo chamber, and I don’t want it to tell you what to think. I want your ideas to be taken seriously enough to be challenged.

You can be controversial. You can be wrong. You can completely disagree with us.

Just bring your reasoning, your curiosity, and preferably a source. :)

Welcome to Disputia.
